The Arts Exploration Mentorship Programme introduces a small cohort of IntoUniversity students to different industries within the Arts, expanding and nurturing their creative skills.
As part of the programme, students created unique artwork based around a specific theme. In 2022, the theme revolved around 'Identity'.

IDENTITY
Yaylacılı,
Sinem Sağlam
I recreated my Grandma’s balcony by recalling childhood memories of it. These memories are a part of my identity as we would travel to my Grandma’s village, Yaylacılı, Saraydüzü which is located in the Sinop Province of Türkiye every summer. The most prominent feature of this room was the red floor sofas that had bedouin patterns on its cushions. The only two major parts of the balcony I could remember were the floor sofas and carpet which makes them stand out because they take up the space. I chose to create a miniature replica because I always felt small on that balcony. Looking back on these memories has reminded me of how much I grew up since then, so I wanted my viewers to also feel larger than my memory.
For this project I used household items such as cardboard and fabric to create a homely feel. Since my replica is from memory, I decided to leave out certain details such as patterns because I could not remember them clearly and did not want to search them up as I thought that would be cheating. It was important for me to use my memory as my only source for reference because most of my village is now flooded because of the Boyabat Dam. My Mother’s side of my family greatly misses what our village used to be, so I wanted to create a piece in honour of our home.
The Beauty of Waheeda
Elisa Naeem
Nature has played a very significant part of my life, at the bottom of the painting is a simplistic painting of roses of different colours and hues blending into one another and after much trial and error and experimenting with different ways to create it, I found that simple was best and roses represent love for me therefore being the best part of nature and botany in which I can express love in.
Also and most importantly there is the moon, this has a dual meaning looking as though its weeping showing a sense of loneliness and this is a testament to mental health and how people feel isolated and away from the world, but also a more positive meaning as the moon is an entity to which people feel connected to and can talk to, myself included. This is also a homage to society and just humanity in general because mental health is something every one has and needs to be taken care of.

Textiles workshop with the Mosaic Rooms
Multiple Students
The group took part in a textiles workshop at the Mosaic Rooms, led by Artist Aya Haidar. The activity encouraged the cohort to use fabric and sewing techniques to explore elements of their identities.
The Mosaic Rooms are a non-profit art gallery and bookshop dedicated to supporting and promoting contemporary culture from the Arab world and beyond in London.
